Working on board a Cruise Ship is to say the least a life changing experience. You will be confronted with so many new and challenging situations whereby you will be tempted to react in some way.
The best policy however is to "Think before you speak".
In the Cruise Ship workplace this maxim could potentially be yet further optimized to "think before you say something to your Dept Manager that could affect your career."
On this topic, here below are 12 key points NOT to Say to your Dept Manager:
1. "I'm only doing this job for the money."
In the Cruise world this is negative and no Dept Manager wants to hear that your only motivation for embarking s your Cruise salary. Its no shame that money is a strong source of motivation, but it is nevertheless best left unsaid.
2. Do NOT complain about your salary: You signed the conract in advance and if you did not read it thoroughly it is your problem.
3. "I'm going to quit at end of the contract". No matter how noble your future plans are, do not future burn bridges. The most comment statement is I'm not coming back, yet so many do and live to regret these words!
4. "I partied hard last night in the Crew Mess." Wise up and get through the day with some Iburofen, extra undereye concealer and coffee. Do not share the details of your Crew Party night with your Manager or those close to the Manager.
5. "It's not my Job" If you wear the badge of the Cruise Line, then it is your job, whatever it may be!
6. My job is boring." Only boring people get bored! Cruise Ships are busy places, there is no time to be bored unless something is wrong with you personally!
7. "My job is too easy." You may think a robot could do your job. Avoid giving your Manager any ideas, at least for the sake of your fellow Crew members.
8. "I can't work with so and so. I hate him." Involving your Manager in personality conflicts should always be your last resort. So unless you are being threatened, a victim of scape goat, encouraged to participate in unethical behavior, or your colleague or customer is engaged in other egregious workplace conduct, try to work it out between yourselves first.
9. "Oh my God! How did you do this job before the Internet/text messaging/Skype?" Although not a cardinal workplace sin, making your Manager feel old will not score you any points.
10. Negative Body Language. Do not Sigh. Grimace. Eye roll or make Retching noises. Actions can speak louder than words. A poker face and silence are golden when you're displeased with your Manager.
11. "Do it yourself!" No need for explanation. Just never say this. Ever.
12. "In my last Company we did it this way." Avoid promoting a former Company or gaining a reputation as an inflexible dinosaur. Keep an open mind about how you do your work.
